What to Look For Before You Buy

Not every seller online is legitimate. Before you buy pepper spray, a stun gun, or any other self-defense tool, check a few basic things first.

A Real Company You Can Actually Contact

Look for a seller with a real phone number, a real address, and a real way to reach a person if something goes wrong with your order. A storefront with nothing but a contact form and no other way to reach anyone is a red flag.

Accurate Age and ID Checks

Most self-defense products are legal at 18, and a few states or products require extra steps. A legitimate seller asks for your age and verifies it where the law requires it. If a site will sell restricted items to anyone with a credit card and no questions asked, that is a warning sign, not a convenience.

A Clear Return and Warranty Policy

You should be able to find the return policy without digging for it. A stun gun or a canister of pepper spray is not something you can test before you carry it, so you want a real guarantee behind it in case it does not work the way you expected.

Specs That Actually Mean Something

Watch out for sellers leaning on huge, meaningless numbers, like a stun gun advertised at 100 million volts. Look for real information instead, like the Major Capsaicinoid percentage on pepper spray, or actual probe spacing and microcoulomb ratings on a stun gun.

Buying Online vs. Buying Local

Buying online usually gives you more selection and lets you compare products side by side before you decide. Buying local lets you hold the product, ask questions in person, and walk out with it the same day. Either way works fine, as long as the seller is legitimate.
