Package theft happens fast. Most porch pirates are in and out in under thirty seconds. The good news is a few simple steps make your house a much harder target.

Get a Camera at Your Front Door

A visible camera is one of the best things you can add. Most thieves check the porch for a camera before they grab anything. If they see one, many will just walk away and look for an easier house down the street. You do not need an expensive system. A basic doorbell camera or a battery powered porch camera works fine, as long as it is easy to see and it is actually recording.

Bring Packages In Fast

The less time a box sits on your porch, the smaller your target window. If you know a delivery is coming, watch for the tracking update and grab the package soon after it arrives. Many carriers now send a text or app alert the moment a package is dropped off. Turn those alerts on and use them.

Ask a Neighbor or Use a Locker

If you will not be home, ask a neighbor you trust to grab your packages for you. Some neighborhoods have community package lockers, or you can have deliveries sent to a locker at a local store instead of your front door.

A Dummy Camera Still Helps

A real camera is best, but a dummy camera with a blinking light can still scare off a lot of thieves. Most porch pirates want an easy target, not a real challenge. A visible camera, real or fake, makes your house look like more trouble than it is worth.

Add a Motion Light

A porch light that turns on when someone walks up does two things. It makes a thief feel like they are being watched, and it helps your camera get a clear picture if someone does try to take a package.

Talk to Your Neighbors

A lot of package theft gets solved by neighbors, not police. If you see a strange car slowly driving through the neighborhood, or someone walking up to houses that are not theirs, say something in your neighborhood group chat or app. Porch pirates often hit several houses in one trip, so one warning can protect the whole block.

What to Do If It Happens to You

File a police report, even for a low value item. It creates a record, and if the same person is hitting multiple houses, those reports can help connect the dots. Also report it to the shipping carrier and the retailer. Many will replace the package or give you a refund, especially if you have delivery confirmation and a police report number.

None of these steps guarantee it will never happen to you. Still, a visible camera, a quick pickup, and a little help from your neighbors take away most of what makes a house an easy target.
